Common terms in international air transportation

 

1. ATA/ATD (Actual Time of Arrival / Actual Time of Departure): abbreviation of actual arrival/departure time.

 

2. Unaccompanied baggage (Baggage, Unaccompanied): baggage that is not carried on the person but checked in, and baggage that is delivered in the form of checked baggage.

 

3. Airwaybill (AWB): a document issued by the consignor or in the name of the consignor, which is the proof of cargo transportation between the consignor and the carrier.

 

4. Bulk Cargo: bulk cargo that has not been loaded on pallets and loaded into cargo boxes.

 

5. CAO (Cargo for Freighter Only): Abbreviation for "Cargo only", which means that it can only be transported by cargo planes.

 

6. Bonded Warehouse: In this warehouse, goods can be stored indefinitely without paying import duties.

 

7. Charges Collect: The charges charged to the consignee are listed on the air waybill.

 

8. Charges Prepaid: The charges paid by the shipper are listed on the air waybill.

 

9. Chargeable Weight: The weight used to calculate air freight. The chargeable weight can be the volumetric weight or, when the goods are loaded in a carrier, the total weight of the load minus the weight of the carrier.

 

10. CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freightage): Refers to "Cost, Insurance and Freight", which is C&F plus insurance purchased by the seller for loss and damage of the goods. The seller must sign a contract with the insurer and pay the premium.

 

11. Consignment: A carrier receives one or more pieces of cargo from a consignor at a certain time and place and carries them to a certain destination on a single air waybill.

 

12. Consignor: Equivalent to the consignor.

 

13. Consignee: The person whose name is listed on the air waybill and receives the cargo shipped by the carrier.

 

14. Consolidator: The person or organization that gathers the cargo into a consolidated consignment.

 

15. Consolidated consignment: A batch of cargo consigned by two or more consignors, each of whom has signed an air transport contract with the consignor.
